The Alpenrail Swiss Model Village & Railway recreates the railways of the Bernese Alps in scale model form. Alpenrail can be found at 82 Abbotsfield Road, Claremont. It is located in the northern parts of Hobart, and is close to the Brooker Highway. Driving from the centre of Hobart, the trip to Alpenrail takes less than twenty minutes.
The Bern-Lotschberg-Simplon line is the inspiration for the model train displays. Along with representations of Swiss mountains, like the Eiger and Jungfrau, the model trains also pass by scale replicas of Swiss villages, trees, bridges, people and animals.
For the children, there is a Smurf train display. Not only is there a Smurf village with the expected mushroom houses, there is even a model train there in Smurf scale. A Thomas The Tank Engine train is also on display.
In 1985 Alpenrail opened and since then there have been many improvements and upgrades to the displays and its electronics and construction. Visitors to Alpenrail can watch a video that shows the construction of the model railways and scenery.
Another part of the Alpenrail experience is the fairy garden, the Wildwoods Realm of Faery has waterfalls, ponds, flowers and diorama scenes.
Alpenrail is open every day except for Tuesdays, there are discounted admission prices for groups.
