Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

Hobart hotels

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery has been at its central Hobart site since 1863. The TMAG has many displays that provide an insight into "the natural and cultural heritage of Tasmania".

It is free to view the exhibitions there, while some special exhibitions do come with an entrance cost, and there are also free guided tours. For nearly an hour, tour groups learn about the Tasmanian Tiger, historic artists, what life was like in Tasmania in the past and the history of the site and buildings.

While what is inside the buildings is important, the actual buildings themselves are rare pieces of history. The Commissariat Store is one of the oldest public buildings in Australia, and the oldest in Tasmania. The Private Secretary’s Cottage, Custom House, Bond Store and Queen's Warehouse also have many stories in their past.

The museum's collections also include a frozen giant squid. The giant squid was found on a beach in Tasmania in 2007.

Visitors can take a break in the Courtyard Cafe and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery shop has many items to purchase as a memento from your trip.

You can find the TMAG at 40 Macquarie Street, Hobart, Tasmania. It is within walking distance of many of Hobart's tourist attractions and those travelling from other parts of Hobart can take the bus there.
