Theatre Royal
The Theatre Royal claims to be Australia's oldest
theatre. Its construction started in 1834 and the first performance took place
in 1837. Entertainment provided ranged from Music Hall to Cock Fighting. The
Theatre has been remodelled several times. A gallery was installed in the 1850s,
for example, and the auditorium was adorned with additional decoration in the
1890s. The theatre has also survived several threats of demolition, with even
Sir Laurence Olivier campaigning for its retention. 29 Campbell Street.
Wrest Point
Casino
To the south of the city centre is Wrest Point Casino and Hotel, the first casino
to have been opened in Australia, in 1973. 410 Sandy Bay Road.
Hobart Nightlife
Hobart nightlife is based around Salamanca Place and the waterfront area.
