Hobart sits between Mt Wellington and the Derwent estuary. A good base for southern Tasmania. The population of Hobart is around 250,000.
Downtown Hobart is around Sullivans Cove which is on the Derwent river and busy area for ships of all sizes. And the end point of the famous Sydney to Hobart sailing race held every January.
In the picturesque harbour are boats selling fish and chips. There are also cruises operating from Hobart Harbour and, from the southern part of the harbour, ferries to Wrest Point Casino. On a fine day one can enjoy sitting here and absorbing the view and the activity.
For sightseeing in
Hobart and all around
Tasmania, there is the
See Tasmania Smartvisit
Card. This card offers
admission to about sixty
attractions around the
island. In most cases
there is nothing more
to pay, but for a few
of the more expensive
attractions the card
merely gives a substantial
discount. There are also
some discounts offered
at restaurants and souvenir
shops. Cards are available
for periods of three,
seven or ten consecutive
days. There
are also some restrictions
on the times of day
or the days of the week
when it can be used,
so be sure to read
all the small print carefully
before deciding to
purchase this ticket.
